When you think of social media, which platforms pops into your head? Twitter? Facebook? Instagram?
While Linkedin may not be as popular as those other platforms, it is bigger than you may think. With 400 million total users, it is nothing compared to Facebook’s one billion plus users but you can expect people on LinkedIn to be more professional. LinkedIn is a true networking website where you can connect with other professionals without the baggage from other platforms. This means more business-related posts and fewer cat videos.
The new classifieds
LinkedIn is a great place to search for jobs. Its database compiles and recommends job openings based on your profession and interests and helps you apply for those positions using information found on your profile. If you upgrade to the Premium version, you can help your profile stand out to hiring managers, get in touch with recruiters, and even see how you compare to other candidates. This is helpful and can ultimately give you an advantage to those going for the same job. Companies and 93% of recruiters also use LinkedIn to post job openings and look for potential employees so it doesn’t hurt to start building your profile because you never know who might be looking at it.
Connect with other like-minded individuals
I have to admit that I neglected LinkedIn for a while. I kept it updated but I wasn’t on it as much as I should have been but that has now changed. I try to go on it at least once a day just to see what my network is talking about and to see if there are any interesting articles I should check out. Since I have been more active on LinkedIn, I have connected with a few old colleagues that have lead to a couple freelance gigs and job opportunities. It has recently become a great place to meet and talk to other like-minded colleagues where I am able to share content, ideas, and values.
Online resume
Unlike other social media profiles, your LinkedIn profile is basically a digital resume. You can add your current and previous work experience, education and showcase company projects you’ve contributed to. Your friends and colleagues can also “endorse” you in different areas and categories they think you are an expert in to build up your notoriety and credibility. If that wasn’t enough, your LinkedIn profile will show up in Google when people search for your name and it will most likely the first thing recruiters and hiring managers will read when they are reviewing employment options.
Aside from personal profiles, business profiles are also in the mix. These types of profiles give an overview of a company showing users what they specialize in, company size, and more. Companies can also make posts that users can like and comment on. A lot of brands and Influencers like Gary Vaynerchuk use this platform to post blogs about their profession and plant their brand in a separate vertical.
Here are a few tips to using LinkedIn, in our opinion:
- Try and keep the sales talk/prospecting to a minimum.
- Consistently share interesting things that relate to you and your business.
- Use LinkedIn as a place to showcase your intellect.
- Publishing is a privilege, not a right
