We wrote about incorporating Snapchat into your marketing plan last October and since then, the social media platform has exploded even more into the mainstream and has evolved almost entirely. Snapchat started out as a platform where two users could share pictures with each other that would self-erase as soon as they were done viewing it.
Now, it is so much more than that. Snapchat has become a place where brands, businesses, and even celebrities go to connect with not only millennials but older audiences as well. The demographic for Snapchat users has grown in the past year and it continues to grow as there are more than 100 million daily users.
Recently, DJ Khaled has been making waves on Snapchat. What makes his Snapchat stories great are the little nuggets of wisdom he posts daily that keeps his fans coming back. Khaled is much like a life coach for millennials teaching them to keep hustling and to overcome life blocks. While some of his advice might be useful, others may be a little over the top.
However, it has excelled his image to whole new heights and we have some major keys on ways you can use Snapchat to your advantage and (kind of) be like DJ Khaled.
Don’t be afraid to try new things
This is probably the most important key. Snapchat stories is a PUBLIC platform and in order for you to be a pro at it, you need to put yourself out there. It may be hard and a little boring at first but once you get the hang of it, you will start to get better and better. Filmmaker Casey Neistat has said that he maps out some of his Snapchat stories in advance to make sure he has all the shots and dialogue. This obviously doesn’t apply to everyone because sometimes, stories are spontaneous but others can be planned out like a short movie to make sure all the bases are covered. This is no different than coming up with a social media and marketing calendar where you plan everything out for a particular day/week/month.
Be authentic
One of the things Khaled does so well is being himself in all of his stories. What you see is what you get from him. He may seem a little brash and a little arrogant at times but he has worked hard to get to where he is and he isn’t afraid to show off his wealth. Besides, that just adds to his persona and his followers WANT to see him hanging with other celebrities and driving in nice cars. It may get a little repetitive but that’s his lifestyle. He isn’t trying to hide who he is nor is he pretending to be someone he’s not.
Keep them coming back for more
If you’ve been following him for a while, you know most of his days start the same way; by eating breakfast (egg whites, turkey bacon, hash browns, and water). After that, he may go outside to water the plants, ride the elliptical machine, and/or head into the studio. He tries to give little lectures on life and success throughout the day that may or may not be useful to his viewers but one thing is for certain, he is always consistent (major key alert). This keeps people coming back for more even if what he does every day is a little bit mundane.
Engage with your followers
In this mobile-driven generation we are living in today, it is very easy to interact with your followers. Smartphones give us the ability to chat with just about anyone in the world and it is important to do so if you want to build your brand. Not only can you see what people are saying about your business (good and bad), you can engage with them to promote your business. Khaled has definitely gained a larger following ever since he joined Snapchat because it got him in front of people that may not have known him from the music world.
Have a quality product
Marketing means nothing if you have a product that no one wants. There are companies that spend millions of dollars in advertising but don’t have a lot of revenue because the product they are selling isn’t very good. Khaled leverages the free platform to bring followers in and view his snaps where he then promotes his own clothing line and vodka company.
DJ Khaled has been well known in the music world for more than ten years but his status elevated ever since he started using Snapchat. He, like most of us, uses other social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram but he found Snapchat to be the best way to spread his message and uses the medium to his advantage. And just like Khaled giving out advice every day, it is up to you to use these keys to tell your own Snapchat story. Be sure to follow us (ThirstyConcepts) while you’re at it.
