Best Celebrity Red Carpet Moment of 2016

Starting with the Golden Globes in January and ending with holiday celebrations and film premieres in December, it was a year filled with red carpets—the celebrity’s runway. In Paris, Kim Kardashian West elevated bedroom dressing to couture-level heights at Givenchy’s show, where she arrived in a hybrid robe turned slip dress. Meanwhile, in May, actress Blake Lively opted for opulence at this year’s Cannes Film Festival in a custom Vivienne Westwood Couture princess dress that flattered her baby bump.

Beyoncé in Givenchy Haute Couture
Taylor Swift in Louis Vuitton
This year also saw dynamic plays on embellishment and pattern—Kendall Jenner in Atelier Versace at the Met Gala, for instance, and Lupita Nyong’o in Jason Wu’s confetti-like design for Hugo Boss at the Tonys. While Jenner went for a futuristic motif, inspired by the image of a computer’s motherboard, Nyong’o brought a refined sense of drama to the theater awards. Also keeping things sophisticated were Amal Clooney and Dakota Johnson, whose solid, ethereal dresses recalled the splendor of Old Hollywood dressing. Clooney marked her first time at Cannes with a cornflower yellow asymmetric Atelier Versace evening frock. And Johnson hinted at her sultry side—please see the Fifty Shades Darker trailer—at the EE British Academy Film Awards in a Dior dress.
Also playing with tonal treatments for wardrobe and beauty was Gigi Hadid, who donned a sleek suit from Mugler for this year’s iHeartRadio MuchMusic Video Awards. The Victoria’s Secret model typically favors slinky ensembles, but it was her polished pantsuit that highlighted her fashion chops. Victoria Beckhamsimilarly elevated the power of menswear, taking cues from Savile Row for her Fall collection. She carried over the concept for her Spring and Pre-Fall collections, but it was the designer’s midnight evening suit that truly transcended the norm.
Also standing out from the crowd were Beyoncé and Taylor Swift, who each gave new life to metallics. Bey upped the ante on her pin-striped Givenchy Haute Couture suit at this year’s CFDA Fashion Awards ceremony, swapping out the traditional fabric-stripe detailing for crystals, while Swift ditched her good-girl image at the Met Gala in lieu of a rocker-chick look—down to her to-the-knee strappy sandals.
